School Mission
  • The Avalon School is a strong, nurturing community that inspires active learning, local action, and global awareness.

Also, we are a 7-12 school! I'm sorry the data doesn't reflect that yet, but we started a 7-8 program in Fall 2005!

Curriculum
  • Foreign language(s) taught: Spanish.

Instructional Program Highlights
  • Independent, student-designed, project-based curriculum supplemented by staff-led special topic seminars
  • Community building
  • (Middle School) A more structured, developmentally appropriate program for middle school students that prepares them to be independent learners in high school and beyond.

Activities and Sports
  • Clubs and extra-curricular activities include: Avalon Theatre group (The Dining Room - 2005, Much Ado About Nothing - 2004, Our Town - 2003); GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) and Technology Committee (helps maintain technology of school, last year sponsored a LAN party at the school).
  • This school has the following art(s) programs: theater/drama.

Parent and Community Support
  • Parents and community members are highly involved in our school. All of the students' independent projects require input from the parents at the beginning and end.

Parents offer special-topic classes inside and outside of the school day. Parents have helped organize the school choir and art events, as well as international travel study plans.

Other news or notes
  • Well, this isn't exactly a "Principal's View" since Avalon doesn't have a Principal. We are run by a teacher cooperative, so all staff members are involved in all major decisions about the school. The staff strongly believes in this democratic process, and we consistently model it for the students as well.
