Dress code Uniforms required: Our uniform matches our beliefs and practices as an Expeditionary Learning school with childen often involved in active learning and fieldwork outside the building. Students wear navy blue uniform pants that many parents purchace at J.L. Marcus and a navy short or long-sleeve t-shirt with A.L.L. name and design principles on it. Student leaders can earn a red leader shirt that is part of the uniform as well. The shirts and corresponding sweatshirts are available only from school. $5.25-.

  • A.L.L. is a community of central-city Milwaukee families and educators uncompromisingly committed to the learning and development of its children as whole persons. Through creative, experiential, problem-based, interdisciplinary teaching and learning opportunities, we develop deep competence as learners. Through action, reflection, dialogue, choice, mentoring and service, we develop deep confidence as leaders. We are dedicated to consciously creating generative community in order to develop this learner competence and leadership confidence. We hold sacred the uniqueness of each individual, the need for caring relationships in learning, and the human calling to make a contribution to the world.

    A.L.L. Vision
    The Academy of Learning and Leadership is a caring community of child and adult learners actively engaged in generating leadership. In an environment of safety, exploration, creativity, dialogue, and choice, the Academy develops competent learners and confident leaders. These focused, action-oriented children and adults use their empowered selves for the common good: healthy living, life-long learning, caring families, stable communities, a just society, and a peaceful world.

Curriculum

Instructional Program Highlights

Activities and Sports

Parent and Community Support
  • 100% attend Student-led Conferences three-four times per year. We have a Parent Leadership Council that meets regularly. Parents attend Fieldwork in our community for social studies and science learning and they come each semester for class Celebrations of Learning. They are active participants in expecting and supporting good student behavior. And they, of course, attend the Winter Program, King Day Celebration, Awards Day, Field Day, and Graduation Ceremony in droves!

  • Recent or upcoming renovations: We have two beautiful elementary buildings on our campus. The first was built in 2003 and is attached to LaVarnway Boys and Girls Club. The second was completed in 2007. We are developing a large urban garden a block from our school and are beginning a small urban forest on our campus. We plan to add a third building in the near future, expanding our grades to include high school. We currently serve 4K-8th grades.
  • Gymnasium and physical education facilities: We have a large gym and swimming pool that are part of our school through the Boys and Girls Club building to which we are attached and have full use of daily. We also take children hiking, canoeing, camping, and rock climbing.
  • Library facilities: Our children's library is housed in the Commons of our newest building. It includes fiction, non-fiction, periodical, and reference materials. Children have access to Mac computers in the classroom for additional research. We have classroom libraries, extensive guided reading libraries for instruction, and an instructional materials library for educators.
